Motorhome vs Campervan: What’s the Difference?
To most people, the terms ‘motorhome’ and ‘campervan’ can be used interchangeably, but there are key differences between the two which are important to understand if you are thinking of buying one for your next holiday!
What is a campervan?
A campervan is typically a standard van that has been converted into a living space. They are designed to be practical and flexible whist and easy to drive, making them ideal for those looking to explore more adventurous destinations or enjoy shorter trips.
Key features of a campervan include:
- Built with a standard van body (Volkswagen Transporter, Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter)
- Compact living space with sleeping area and integrated kitchen
- Can include fold-out beds or pop-top roofs
- Limited/no bathroom facilities
- Easier to drive and park, similar to a large car
Campervans are often more popular with solo travelers or couples who need the flexibility to use the vehicle for everyday driving as well as for holidays.
What is a motorhome?
A motorhome is a larger and more leisure-focused vehicle designed to offer a more complete home-on-wheels experience when travelling. Unlike campervans, motorhomes are usually fitted with a full living accommodation unit and built for living.
Key features of a motorhome include:
- Separate living, sleeping and dining areas
- Fully equipped kitchen
- Bathroom facilities, often including a toilet and shower
- More interior space and standing room
- Designed for longer stays and extended travelling
Motorhomes are better suited to families or travelers who need more space, comfort and convenience on their adventures.
Motorhome vs Campervan: Key Differences
Although they serve a similar purpose, when you compare the two the differences are clear:
- Size & Driving – Campervans are smaller and easier to drive, often fitting into standard parking spaces whilst motorhomes are larger and require more confidence on the road when driving.
- Comfort & Facilities – Campervans offer the essential facilities for cooking and sleeping but motorhomes provide full living amenities, such as bathrooms and dedicated living areas.
- Travel Goals – Campervans are better suited to short breaks, weekend adventures and frequent movement. However, motorhomes are ideal for longer holidays or extended stays in one location.
Which should you choose?
The right choice depends entirely on how you plan to travel and the size of the party travelling.
A campervan may be better suited to you if you need something easy to drive and park, a more compact setup and you intend on going on shorter trips. A motorhome may be the better option if you need more space and home comfort, you are planning on taking longer holidays or you are travelling with your family and need a larger living area.
